How often do you shift gears in life?

Posted on Oct 24th, 2009 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 21, 2009:

I shift gears in life just like my car does.  When I find myself revving faster and making less progress, it's time to shift gears.  When I find myself sputtering and jerking, it's time to shift gears.  Like the car, shifting gears for me, could mean I need to slow down and appreciate things OR it may mean that I need to speed up and get things done!

Just like the car, I'm never really sure when I need to shift gears; but, I can always feel it coming.  Sometimes I can go for a long time, like highway driving, and sometimes its frequent, like city driving.  For me, the changing and adapting is the fun part of living!!

What kind of person do you want to be?

Posted on May 7th, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for May 07, 2008:

I want to be three people wrapped up in one beautiful package.

First I want to be a fun person, someone that others enjoy being with.  Not always the life of the party; but, someone who can sense the moment and be solumn or stupid at the appropriate times.

Second, I want to be a nurturing person.  Someone that helps others (and myself) grow, mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

Finally, I want to be a loving and lovable person.  Without these features, the other two are pointless.

I'm on my way, just hope there's enough time! :-)

How do you love the Earth?

Posted on Apr 22nd, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 22, 2008:

The answer to this question is very simple and comes to us from the city of Athens over two thousand years ago.  Ref.  http://bassicallytom.gaia.com/blog/2008/3/the_athenian_oath

Substitue "Earth" for "city" and the instructions for loving the earth are clear:

"Thus in all these ways we will transmit this City, not only not less, but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us."

Of course, as a civilization, we must change our mindset from conqueror of the earth to steward of the earth.

What is the best way to show someone you love them?

Posted on Apr 13th, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 13, 2008:

Very simply put, Pay Attention.

I believe that many relationships, any relationship, with partners, with children, with friends, or with work, falter because we become distracted.  We no longer pay attention, we no longer spend the time, we no longer make the effort.

If we 'grow apart' in a relationship, it is because we leaning away from inattention toward attention, just as a plant will grow away from the darkness toward the light.

To quote Dr. Peck from The Road Less Traveled, "When we love something it is of value to us, when something is of value to us, we spend time with it, time enjoying it and time taking care of it."

The Athenian Oath

Posted on Mar 28th, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom

"We will never bring disgrace on this our City by an act of dishonesty or cowardice.

We will fight for the ideals and Sacred Things of the City both alone and with many.

We will revere and obey the City's laws, and will do our best to incite a like reverence and respect in those above us who are prone to annul them or set them at naught.

We will strive increasingly to quicken the public's sense of civic duty.

Thus in all these ways we will transmit this City, not only not less, but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us."

(Taken by the young men of ancient Athens when they reached the age of seventeen.)

How can you be the change that you want to see in the world?

Posted on Mar 28th, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for March 28, 2008:

I have been thinking about “The Athenian Boys’ Oath” lately. Young Athenian boys would memorize and recite the entire oath back around the fourth century BC.  I taught it to my students in 7th grade English many years later!!  I'll post the whole thing on my blog later tonight.

The last line states:
“We will transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

That’s how I try to look at everything, work, play, relationships, even chance meetings in the store or in traffic. I would like for every encounter to be better, more beautiful because I was there.  Of course, for me, the key word is "try". :-)

How can we become the change?  We can practice what the Greeks knew thousands of years ago.

The Coffee or The Cup?

Posted on Mar 11th, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

'If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began
eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy
the coffee God has provided us.'

God brews the coffee, not the cups ... Enjoy your coffee!

'The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.'

Live simply
Love generously
Care deeply
Speak kindly

What would you march for?

Posted on Mar 2nd, 2008 by BassicallyTom : Voyager BassicallyTom
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for March 01, 2008:

I have marched for civil liberties when the president came to town; but, this administration is so isolated from any form of dissent, the march ended up as an afternoon of fresh air and commaradiery.  That's not wasted time.
